Best Snorkeling Spots Near Phuket by Yacht

If snorkeling is one of the reasons you are planning a yacht charter in Phuket, choosing the right destination is just as important as choosing the right yacht.

Not every island offers the same underwater experience. Water clarity, coral health, marine life and sea conditions vary throughout the year. After hundreds of private charters around Phuket, we have learned that the best snorkeling is not about following the same route every day. It is about knowing where the conditions are best at that particular moment.

Here are the snorkeling spots we recommend most often.

Racha Yai Island

For most guests, Racha Yai is the best snorkeling destination near Phuket.

The island is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise water, gentle bays and healthy coral reefs. Visibility during the high season often exceeds 20 meters, making it perfect for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

You will regularly see parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, sergeant majors and many other colorful tropical species. The calm conditions also make Racha Yai one of the best choices for families with children.

If someone asks us where to experience the classic “postcard” snorkeling in Phuket, this is usually our first recommendation.

A typical Racha Yai morning - the boat anchors right over the reef and everyone swims from the stern.

Racha Noi Island

Located just south of Racha Yai, Racha Noi offers a more adventurous underwater experience.

The reefs are deeper, the water is incredibly clear, and marine life is often even more impressive. On lucky days, visitors may spot eagle rays or even manta rays passing through deeper waters during the season.

Because sea conditions here can change quickly, our captains always assess the weather before deciding whether Racha Noi is the right choice for the day.

Maiton Island

Maiton Island combines beautiful scenery with excellent snorkeling close to Phuket.

The reefs around the island are home to colorful reef fish and healthy coral formations, while the surrounding waters are known for their vibrant blue color.

Many guests also hope to see dolphins, which are occasionally spotted around the island, although nature always has the final say.

For shorter yacht charters, Maiton is one of our favorite recommendations.

Coral Island

Coral Island is one of the easiest snorkeling destinations to reach from Phuket.

Its shallow water and gentle conditions make it an excellent option for first-time snorkelers and families with young children. While the coral here is not as spectacular as around the Racha Islands, the island remains a great place to spend a relaxed day swimming, snorkeling and enjoying the beach.

Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands offer some of Thailand's most spectacular scenery both above and below the water.

Snorkeling here combines dramatic limestone cliffs, turquoise lagoons and vibrant marine life. Depending on the location, you will discover colorful coral gardens, schools of tropical fish and excellent visibility.

Because Phi Phi is one of Thailand's most popular destinations, timing is important. Visiting by private yacht allows you to avoid the busiest hours and enjoy quieter snorkeling spots away from the crowds.

Why choose a private yacht for snorkeling?

The biggest advantage of a private yacht is not simply comfort. It is flexibility.

Every morning our captains study the weather forecast, wind direction, tides and sea conditions before confirming the day's route. Unlike scheduled group tours, a private yacht allows us to adapt the itinerary throughout the day, giving you the best possible snorkeling conditions.

Captain's tip

Sometimes moving just a few hundred meters around an island can completely change the underwater visibility. That is exactly the kind of call a private captain makes for you on the spot - and a scheduled tour never can.

What marine life can you see?

Every trip is different, but guests commonly encounter:

The Andaman Sea is home to an incredible variety of marine life, and every snorkeling session brings something new.

Our recommendation

If snorkeling is your main priority, we usually recommend Racha Yai as the best all-around destination. For guests looking for a longer adventure, combining Racha Yai and Racha Noi creates one of the finest snorkeling experiences available from Phuket.

At Star Sailing Club, we never follow exactly the same itinerary every day. Every private charter is planned around the weather, the sea and your preferences, ensuring you experience Phuket at its very best.
